Microsoft has released the Windows 7 Federated Search Provider Implementer’s Guide to help developers build a web-based data source that can be searched using Windows Federated Search.

What is Federated Search?

Federated search enables users to search remote data sources from within Windows Explorer. Remote data sources make themselves searchable with a simple web front end that exposes their search capabilities. In fact, some data sources may already support the minimum requirements for search federation. It also allows searching across networks and many PCs. It can be used for searching on computers running Windows Server 2008 and establish a direct intranet connection. Direct Preview is one of the most significant features to Federated Search.
